FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about moving a water meter fleet from manual reads to digital metering and managed data.
What is meter data management for water utilities?
Meter data management is the software layer that collects, validates, stores and reports the readings from a water meter fleet. Data Drop’s cloud platform, Aura, takes reads from manual, walk-by, drive-by and fixed-network (AMI) sources, checks them for gaps and errors, and feeds billing systems and reporting portals from one dataset.
Do we need to replace our mechanical meters to go digital?
No. Data Drop retrofits existing mechanical meters from manufacturers including Elster, Itron, Sensus, Diehl and Maddalena with inductive-sensor modules such as Mac-IQ, so the meter stays in the ground while reads move from manual to remote. Meters can be exchanged later, on your own schedule.
What is the difference between walk-by, drive-by and fixed-network meter reading?
Walk-by uses a handheld receiver (Data Drop’s WDCR turns an Android phone into one) to collect reads on foot. Drive-by uses a vehicle-mounted receiver to collect reads along a route. Fixed network, also called AMI, uses permanent gateways or NB-IoT modules so reads arrive automatically without a site visit. Most utilities move through these stages over several years.
Can the platform work with our existing billing system?
Yes. Aura has built-in compatibility with existing billing platforms and exports validated reads on your billing cycle. Data Drop is technology-agnostic, so the platform sits alongside existing head-end systems rather than replacing them.
Which regions does Data Drop serve?
Data Drop works with water utilities, councils, developers and commercial sites across Australia and New Zealand from its base in Chandler, Queensland.
